I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.Mark Twain, Tom Sawyer Abroad
It’s all too easy to get caught in a rut in life – usually one of your own making. Sometimes you forget there’s a big wide world out there, just waiting for you to explore.
You focus on your job, your career, and all the tiny details of “modern life” that don’t actually mean anything. After all, how many people utter last words like, “…I wish I spent more time in the office”?
So, here are 14 couples to light the fire of adventure in your soul:
The World Pursuit
Natasha & Cameron
Natasha and Cameron Alden are living their lives in the way most people promise themselves they will, but never quite get around to. After meeting in college, the two left to travel the world together and never really stopped.
Their adventure so far has taken them to over 60 different countries spanning North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australasia.
These days they like to spend a little more time in each country, but that didn’t stop them spending a year traveling across Africa by Land Cruiser on their “Hashtag Africa” adventure.
And they did all of this before they even hit their 30s!
One of their favorite memories is spending a day swimming with sharks and manta rays off a beach in Mozambique. And then spending that evening eating curry, drinking coconut water and watching Right Whales breaching just a few hundred meters away.
Now that’s living!
Adventure In You
Tom & Anna
Tom and Anna’s story kind of sounds like the script for a Hollywood movie – two young backpackers who met and fell in love on their journey around the world.
They’ve spent the last 4 years traveling around the world, with the ultimate goal of experiencing the top 50 travel adventures.
So, what has been a memorable highlight so far? A trek to the Everest base camp in Nepal is one they’ll never forget.
But they’ve also taken part in a tuk tuk (motorized rickshaw) race across Sri Lanka, rode a motorbike across Vietnam, and even gone on an orangutan jungle trek in Sumatra, Indonesia.
Don’t be – they’ve only completed approximately 12% of their travel and adventure goals so far. Their best stories are yet to come!
Land Cruising Adventure
Karin-Marijke & Coen
When you picture most international adventure couples, you probably imagine them literally rushing from airport to hostel, to train. And then rinse and repeat for months at a time.
And some do just that.
But that’s not Coen and Karin-Marijke.
Their overland trips in their vintage Land Cruiser took them from Holland across the Middle East and into Southeast Asia between 2003 and 2006.
Then in 2007 they took their Land Cruiser on a 9-year journey through South America, visiting all 13 countries.
Nine years isn’t a typo by the way, and it’s also the reason why they’ve earned the title of “Slowest Overlanders On The Planet”
Right now they’re in Northeast Asia, traveling across the vast expanse of Mongolia, and Russia, with plans to visit the various Stan countries e.g. Afghanistan, Pakistan etc.
Alesha & Jarryd
Two Australians who traveled the world solo, and just happened to meet each other in a Canadian hostel.
Alesha Bradford and Jarryd Salem – or Lesh and Jazza to their friends – first met in a Vancouver hostel in 2008.
Their first adventure together was driving 40,000km around Canada (it’s a big, big place), before deciding to travel to Central America, and spend time their exploring temples, learning how to sail, a trek to El Mirador, and even learning to scuba dive.
Their next plan was to backpack around Africa, which turned into a flight to Thailand, 14 months traveling across Southeast Asia – 14,000km of which on a motorbike, before finally arriving in Istanbul aboard a cargo ship.
And, to this day, they’re still not sure why they wound up traveling by cargo ship.
Right now they’re back in Australia for a few months, but isn’t it amazing what a chance meeting in a hostel can lead to?
Sunny & Karin
Sunny and Karin Balsley had good jobs with a career path, a nice home, and a great dog. But they weren’t happy, and kept asking themselves what was missing in their lives.
They didn’t have a good answer…except that something needed to change.
So, they sold their house and all their belongings (and their dog) on an overland adventure through Mexico, and on to Central and South America.
Their journey so far has taken them through Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Belize and El Salvador – all with the final goal of reaching Tierra del Fuego.
The Planet D
Dave & Deb
Dave and Deb were married for almost two decades before they realized there were something missing in their life together – traveling the world.
They remedied that with a 5 week trek to Thailand and then in 2008 by signing up for the Tour d’Afrique – a bicycle race around Africa. That was the catalyst for their wanderlust.
Since then they’ve traveled to Everest base camp, driven from England to Mongolia in a rally, and even trekked across parts of Antarctica by kayak, and then on foot.
That’s literally just a sampling of where they’ve been – which so far includes 100 countries on seven continents.
Their favorite destinations from everywhere they’ve been?
Antarctica, Mongolia and South Africa.
Goats On The Road
Dariece & Nick
Dariece & Nick never set out to travel the world from 2011 until today. In fact, they started out by traveling to Mexico for a week just to get away from their humdrum lives in Canada.
And then they got the bug while in Mexico.
Not “that” bug – the travel one.
Over the next 8 years they backpacked across Southeast Asia.
That set the tone for the next few years of their lives as they traveled through Europe, Africa and the Middle East, as well as pretty much everywhere in Asia.
They even spent a few years living and working in China as English teachers.
Along the way they also managed to “Turn Travel Into A Lifestyle” with their very successful travel blog.
Yasha & Juergen
There’s nothing wrong with traveling the world by buying a plane ticket, grabbing your bags and flying off to start your adventure somewhere exotic.
But it does take more determination to go old school and overland your way around the world, which is exactly what Yasha Langford & Juergen Klein did.
Except they also built their own camper (named Berta) to go traveling in.
And travel they did, spending 3 years (2006 – 2009) traveling from the Arctic Circle to the southernmost parts of Argentina.
In fact, they enjoyed their overlanding in South America so much they spent another 4 years driving through it, from 2014 to 2018.
Where are they right now? Overlanding across Europe on their way to the Middle East until 2020 at the earliest.
Travel With The Smile
Maya & Michal
Maya and Michal are originally from Slovakia, and loved spending time in the outdoors.
So they did the natural thing and moved to Banff in Canada, because it’s basically one big wide open space.
They spent the next 4 years rock climbing, skiing cross-country, diving off cliffs, visiting ice caves and mountain biking for thousands of kilometers.
But that wasn’t enough to whet their appetite for travel, so they’re now traveling the world, having already taken in all of Central America and South America.
Right now they’re taking a breather in New Zealand, before they start their journey across the Pacific Rim and into Russia, Mongolia and the rest of Northern Asia.
Our Escape Clause
Jeremy & Kate
Jeremy and Kate have been traveling the world since 2016. This was the result of a 6-month trip turning into a life of having no fixed abode, but loving every single moment of it.
How does their life compare to yours?
Well in the last few short years this young married couple have camped out on a volcano in Guatemala, spent time giving elephants in Thailand a mud spa, and ridden camels across the Sahara.
They’ve enjoyed everything from wine tasting to hot air balloon rides, horseback riding and scuba diving.
Right now they’re in Dubrovnik, but that’s only yet another stop on their onward journey – one with no end in sight.
A Cruising Couple
Dan & Casey
Many of the international adventure couples featured in this blog post started their globetrotting experiences once they got tired of the daily grind of the 9 – 5.
Dan and Casey however started their lives together when they were 15. Married at 22, they decided to combine their honeymoon with their passion – travel.
So they took 7 months out to travel across North America, stopping to enjoy fine wines in the Napa Valley and hot air ballooning in New Mexico.
Next up was a trip to live in Taiwan while teaching English. One year turned into two, and they made the most of their base in Taiwan to travel through most of Asia.
Right now they’re living in Costa Rica, which they describe as “paradise”.
Have they stopped traveling? Nope – they use Costa Rica as their HQ to plan even more travel adventures from.
Luxe Adventure Traveler
Jennifer & Tim
Tim and Jennifer are a couple who decided to combine their passion for adventure sports and holidays…with staying in luxury hotels.
They originally met while working at the same Blockbuster Video store in Nevada, even though Tim is originally from Chicago and Jennifer is from Erie, Pennsylvania.
So far they’ve traveled to more than 60 countries across 4 continents, with some of the highlights being the Maldives, visiting the Burj Khalifa, an African safari, snorkeling in Iceland, and swimming with dolphins off Anguilla.
But they always finish out their day relaxing in a great hotel.
After all, not every travel adventure should end in an uncomfortable hostel or roof-top tent – why not finish an amazing day with an equally amazing night?
Right now they’re based in Bordeaux, France, but their wanderlust is as strong now as it ever has been and their bucket list is proof of that.
Chris & Danika
Sometimes the best decisions in life are the ones you make on the spur of the moment.
So when Chris Garlottas turned to his wife Danika and suggested they take a time out from modern life, it only took a few more drinks before they decided to quit their jobs, book a one-way ticket to Rome, and start their new life of international travel.
Highlights have been the stunning sights of the Netherlands, Lantau Island off Hong Kong, Halong Bay in Vietnam, chilling out on Bali, swimming with sea turtles off the Maldives, hiking through rain forests in Malaysia, exploring deserts in the United Arab Emirates and even trekking across a glacier in Iceland.
That’s not a complete list either – they’ve seen and done way more!
They’ve now been living out of a suitcase since 2014, but don’t regret a moment of it. Probably because they plan their trips so well that they use apartments instead of hotels, saving themselves a small fortune as a result.
Alya & Campbell
So far we’ve had young couples, adventurous couples, and even couples who love traveling but need to sleep in luxury hotels each night.
What we haven’t had is a couple who spend as little money as possible while traveling.
Enter Campbell and Alya, who just happened to bump into each other in a surf hostel on Luzon Island, and have now spent the last 4 years traveling the world together.
Are they really stingy?
Yup – they can get by on a budget of $5 a day when required.
But that hasn’t stopped them from having some amazing experiences, and for as little money as possible.
These include hitch-hiking trough Central and South America (see – no bus, train or plane fares), diving off the coast of Indonesia, and even traveling all over Africa just because they love animals.
They even went as far as hiking to Everest Base Camp…without a guide because it saved the money.
You probably feel the urge to quit your job and travel the world right now. We don’t blame you.
If you could quit your job and travel to any foreign country – where would it be and why? Let us know with a comment below.
